Monochrome Portrait Painting

- with the acclaimed visual artist

Anne Juul Christophersen

as your dedicated instructor

Would you like to learn how to paint a truly excellent and lifelike portrait?

- So that, once and for all, you will be satisfied with the result when you put down the brush and have completed the portrait.

- So the portrait actually resembles the person you have painted.

- So that everyone who sees the painting thinks – WOW – it's well painted.

It can easily be quite a hassle

The eyes pop up on the forehead,

- the pupils look in two different directions, making the poor subject completely cross-eyed.

The shadows, if you dare to tackle them at all, become flat and too light or too dark - and where the cheek should be round, there is instead just a big flat gray-purple-pink blob.

And yes - that thing with blending facial colors...

It's an entire chapter in itself...

It can easily turn into several liters of the aforementioned gray-purple-pink color,

- which really only belongs in the trash can.

SIGH!

It's no wonder that you easily give up when it comes to the portrait.

- Because there's just so much that needs to work, if, of course, you ever dare to show it to the person you've portrayed.

Fear not!

There is hope.

Regardless of whether:

You have NEVER dared to paint a portrait before

or

You have tried – and regretted, because your result resembled what is described above

or

You already create portraits that you are satisfied with but could use some new inspiration

- then you will be able to paint lively and lifelike portraits that you will be truly satisfied with after completing our cohort course:

"Monochrome Portrait Painting"

- where the acclaimed and highly popular visual artist Anne Juul Christophersen takes you by the hand and guides you calmly, step by step, ensuring you navigate through the entire process with 100% confidence.

You only need four things to paint a portrait

1. brushes,
2. canvas (or a piece of paper),
3. water,
4. white paint + just one other color of your choice,

Indeed.

That´s all it takes.

We reckon you probably already have the necessary gear at home, don't you??

All you need additionally is:

the desire and the willingness to learn how to create a realistic and lifelike portrait. You'll be taken by the hand and guided through the entire process by the visual artist Anne Juul Christophersen.

The strategic roadmap for our dynamic cohort experience:

Note: All modules will be available on the site, allowing you the flexibility to join at your convenience.
There's no need to adhere to specific dates; join whenever it suits you best.

Week 1 - Sunday March 17

Module 1: Getting started with your portrait

In this introductory module of the 'Monochrome Portrait Painting' course, we delve into the fundamental skills and decisions essential for creating a monochrome portrait.

Firstly, you'll choose the subject for your portrait. You can either select a photo of a person you wish to paint or follow Anne Juul, who provides an opportunity to practice with an image of the well-known little girl from her own paintings

You'll be choosing canvas/paper and color.

Finally, you commence the actual painting process by applying the base layer to the canvas, preparing the foundation for your portrait.

Module 2: Drawing and working on the large surfaces"

Firstly, you need to make a decision on how you want to transfer your subject onto the canvas. Choose between classic freehand drawing, modern OHP/projector techniques, or the detail-oriented grid technique. Opting for the grid technique grants you access to a specialized guide that demonstrates how to master this method.

We begin by outlining the contours of your subject, then proceed to paint the large areas with white. This marks the first step in creating depth and dimension in your portrait.

Next, we work on defining the darkest areas in the image, bringing contrast and life to your artwork. Following that, we concentrate on getting the shadows in place, which is crucial for capturing the unique features of the person.

We conclude by layering the white with a light shade, adding finesse and perfection to your portrait.

Anne Juul guides you - step by step - through each of these processes

Week 2 - Sunday March 24

Module 3: Into the details of the eyes

In week 2, we embark on an in-depth journey into the art of painting eyes, one of the most expressive elements in any portrait. Follow Anne as she guides you step by step to capture the essence and beauty of the eyes.

Anne provides detailed instructions and demonstrates techniques to bring the eyes to life on canvas. This is a unique opportunity to master the art of capturing light, shadow, and soul in the eyes.

Afterward, you expand your focus to include the eye surroundings. Anne shows how, with delicate brushstrokes, you can create realism and depth, enhancing the expression of your subject's eyes.

To complete the upper face, you move up to the forehead. Learn how to work with the forehead's shape and texture using subtle techniques, complementing the overall expression in your portrait.

This module is a chance to explore how small details can have a significant impact on the overall artwork. It's an invitation to delve into the subtle nuances that make portrait painting such a fascinating art form. Prepare for a week full of instructive moments and personal development in portrait art.

Week 3 - Sunday March 31

Module 4: The nose and mouth "grow" on the canvas

In week 3, you will delve into the exciting process of creating the nose and mouth, essential features that add character and expression to any portrait. Anne will guide you through each step, helping you understand the subtle details that make a significant difference in your artwork.

First, you'll focus on the nose. Anne will show you how to paint the nose with precision and care, teaching you to capture the light, shadows, and nuances that make the nose both realistic and expressive.

Next, you'll expand your work to include the area around the nose. This step is crucial to ensure that the nose integrates harmoniously with the rest of the face, creating a natural and cohesive expression.

Then, attention turns to the mouth. Anne will lead you through the process of painting the mouth, where you'll learn to capture its unique shape and the subtle expressions it can convey.

Finally, you'll work on the area around the mouth. This part is essential for creating coherence between the mouth and the rest of the face, resulting in a more lifelike and convincing portrait.

Week 4 - Sunday April 7

Module 5: Finishing and the possibilities when using varnish

You've now reached the crucial phase where your artwork transforms from a 'work in progress' to a finished portrait painting. This module focuses on refinement and details that will add depth, realism, and character to your portrait.

You'll start by refining the neck and face. Anne will show you how small adjustments can make a significant difference, adding an extra dimension of realism and liveliness to your portrait.

Next, you'll add highlights to the face. This technique is crucial for accentuating the facial features and creating a lively expression. Anne will guide you on where and how to place these highlights to maximize their effect.

Afterward, you'll move on to work on the hair. Anne will instruct you on creating the texture and movement of individual hair strands, enhancing the authenticity of your portrait.

When your portrait is complete, Anne will guide you through considerations regarding whether to varnish your painting. Varnishing is an important step to preserve the intensity of colors and protect your artwork over time.

Week 5 - Sunday April 14

Module 6:  Bonus  Focus on creating even more vibrant hair

In this additional bonus module, Anne provides you with a unique opportunity to delve even deeper into the art of painting hair. After the formal conclusion of the course, Anne takes you on a detailed journey where you'll learn to create hair that truly brings your portrait to life. The significance of hair cannot be underestimated – it adds character and dynamics to your portraits.

This module is dedicated to exploring, step by step, how to delve even further into painting hair with a finesse that makes your portraits appear even more vibrant. Anne shares her personal techniques and secrets that will help you understand the texture, direction, and how light plays a crucial role in creating realistic effects in the strands of hair.

See what others have gained from the course:

♥ I had never painted a portrait before I started the course. I had avoided it, thinking it was too difficult since I'm not particularly skilled at drawing and was afraid of working with shadows. The course has broken down some limitations I had within myself

- Isabelle

Thank you for a very inspiring course.

I have never painted portraits before, but this has sparked a desire for more portrait painting

- Gro

The course was incredibly rewarding for me.

I have painted a few portraits before and always struggled to get the right skin tone, so it was liberating and artistically rewarding to work with just two colors. In my case, Payne´s Grey and white.

I was surprised by how many effects could be achieved, partly with the dark background and by mixing only two colors.

Anne and Jesper, with their good humor and excellent teaching approach, guided us students safely through the various techniques: transferring the motif, building up the individual elements of the face - eyes, nose, mouth, hair, and shadows - so that each of us painted our individual monochrome portraits.

- Marianne

Here you can see one of the portraits Marianne created during the course.

I find it to be a great course. I feel very much guided and helped step by step. It's nice to have the craftsmanship side incorporated into the teaching. It provides an opportunity to see my own development and, especially, where there is a need to practice skills. I have watched the videos several times and discover something new in them each time.
- Anna Lise

♥ I like the disciplined approach that Anne has shown us. It somehow gives a reassuring feeling that 'you will get there.' Especially the comments like: 'Now we'll just do this and that, but it's not so important that it's completely accurate because we'll come back to the area,' have made me relax during the process.
- Majlis

♥ Thank you so much for the introduction to painting a Monochrome portrait. I can't stop and have plenty of ideas for the next ones.
- Marianne

Enjoy watching Anne work. Absolutely useful, and both of you have delightful humor and a light tone.
- Anne Sofi

Wonderful, wonderful course - enjoyed every hour with the brush.
- Else Marie

I am 'hooked' on painting monochrome portraits and have started on the second one.
- Marianne

Thank you so much for a fantastic course; I've loved every moment.
- Tina

Thank you for a great course - I am very hooked on it.
- Birgitte

Thank you for the loveliest course! It was very inspiring to witness Anne's "nerdiness" and generous sharing of experiences and techniques!
- Else

A thousand thanks for a really good and instructive course! I can hardly wait to start the next painting.
-Anni

I find it very enjoyable to follow this modular course! It's excellent to be able to follow Anne's instructions and then stop and go back to check that I've grasped it!
- Elin

What an exciting course! It's an intriguing process you're guiding me through, Anne and Jesper. As always, I love your way of interacting. You know how to capture my attention (which can be a challenging task)
- Maiane

I especially enjoy seeing the anarchist Anne jumping around in the painting, doing a bit here and a bit there, all while maintaining a keen eye for the overall cohesion of the artwork. Super liberating.
- Knud

How enlightening, Anne. A thousand thanks for this course. It's truly something I can learn from.
